Dubai is a Muslim Emirate of United Arab Emirates and it is one of the most liberal in all the Middle East. Having said that, there are some faux-pas that need to be avoided in order not to offend the local populace!

Dress
Allowed to wear bikinis and normal swim wear at the beach, however, it is recommended that one restrict the wearing of such clothing for the beach and not open to the public. In addition, the topless bathing is not permitted, and thongs can also cause a crime the local population. Although it is common for men to go topless for a walk across Europe, it is frowned upon here, so please respect the local customs and culture, so that you comply with the local clothing. Short skirts and revealing tops will also attract attention and are not considered appropriate attire for the public forums, such as shopping malls shopping district.

Alcohol
Alcohol is allowed in Dubai and can be purchased in Duty Free Shop on the way to this country. The limit for this is 4 bottles of each person. Alcohol can’t be purchased in supermarkets or liquor store here, if you are a resident of alcohol licenses. Nevertheless, alcohol is readily available in most hotels, bars, nightclubs and restaurants associated with hotels.

Alcohol is not allowed to use on the streets and there is zero tolerance for drunk driving. There are also some holidays or periods of mourning, where alcohol will be served in public places. If it is important to you, please check before booking your holiday if the date suffers from these restrictions.

Drugs
Dubai also has zero-tolerance drug-related offenses, or takes drugs or human trafficking, with very severe consequences if caught. Please note that Dubai is as stringent as other Asian countries (Thailand), and remember ‘Dubai’s equivalent of the “Bangkok Hilton” is not the place to spend a holiday, and many more, if caught.

The Emirate of Dubai has provisions relating to controlled drugs, so that those who travel on prescription medication can check whether these rules impact them. Medications such as Tylenol 3 have limitations (as it contains codeine), so it is always important to check beforehand. If you are traveling with a prescription medication, is recommended only the necessary amount needed for your trip (not exceeding 3 months as a maximum), and a letter from your doctor. Some drugs require prior authorization from the Ministry.

Sex
Major public displays of affection should be avoided because they may offend, but homosexuality is also not permitted in any part of the UAE.

As Dubai is governed by Sharia law, it is strongly recommended that unmarried couples traveling together in the emirate to arrange independent housing.

Illegal Imports
The following items are some of the forbidden imports to Dubai:-

  • Firearms / dangerous weapons
  • Religious propaganda
  • Unstrung pearls except for personal use
  • Raw seafood (only when visiting Dubai and/or Sharjah) or fruit and vegetables from cholera-infected areas.

Medical Tips
Make sure you are fully covered for medical treatment through travel insurance. Although pharmacies willing to provide medicines is quite accessible (there is even a Boots chemist here now), treatment, hospitalization and evacuation can add up to large volume. Hospitals are usually very well equipped, and yet there are specialists in all areas of medicine with many modern treatments.

Visas
Please contact your local embassy for a visa. While many countries may enter on a tourist visa for up to 60 days (valid at the time of publication), some countries are not allowed to enter without a valid visa on arrival.

Money
The local currency is UAE Dirham (AED UAE). There are currently many banks in Dubai, UK, Lloyds, HSBC, etc., and all the local banks offer cash withdrawal facilities from ATMs in many hotels and shopping centers. Please do not try to change money on the streets, because it is not recommended form of the transaction because of the possibility of fraudulent notes being offered.

Driving
On a visit visa, you can drive on an International driving license, but this changes when you become a resident, at which time you will need to apply for a Dubai driving license. Don’t drink and drive, ever. Penalties can range from large fines, to imprisonment and even lashings and deportation. If you have an accident, remain with your car in the exact place where the accident happened and call the police who will handle the accident in accordance with local laws.
